As some of you may already know, I am currently living in Drewsteignton. Whilst working for the project, I am studying for a degree in youth and community work with practical theology with Centre for Youth Ministries in Bristol. Two days a fortnight I have to travel up to CYM for lectures which so far have included days on child protection, line management and relationships, how to work effectively and biblical studies. On The Edge is my placement for the duration of the course which is three years and as well as Uni work, I have to give a proportion of my time each week to the project, including running groups with the teenagers of the area, attending various events, and generally being around the community getting to know more and more people. I am so excited about working for the project and already have ideas about new initiatives that could be set up. I have a strong belief in helping the young people in our communities to build on their interests and ideas about what they would like to happen. My aim is ensure that the most is made of the opportunities that they present me with. My current work… Up until now my work has mainly been getting myself known around Chagford and Drewsteignton and meeting up with a lot of different people, which my course tends to call ‘networking’. One of my aims for the next couple of months up until Christmas is to get to know more of the teenagers around the areas I am working by meeting them on their terms and hopefully begin to build some good relationships with them. I run a group on Thursday evenings with a number of young people from Chagford and a few from the surrounding area. The group is such a great mix of personalities and I am so pleased to be a part of it. They have made me feel very welcome. In the Summer the group performed their drama ‘Street Talk’ at the Chagford Arts Festival and again for my welcome service in Gidleigh church. They have a few ideas about possible new projects to work on, so watch this space!!! |
